Patrick Widdess presents

Cambridge Market

These photos come from a collection of over 1000 that I shot in Cambridge Market Square in the first half of 2009. The market is a thriving hub for local traders seven days a week. It is frequented by local consumers and tourists and offers a range of goods and services. CDs and vinyl records, fresh fish, fruit & vegetables, jewellery, books, bags, secondhand bikes, health foods, garden plants, mobile phones and accessories, and much more can be found on its stalls. I have tried to capture the variety of people and activity and the atmosphere which changes from day to day, hour by hour.

I have been interested in photography for ten years. I began experimenting with a basic compact camera and became fascinated by its ability not just to visually record the world around us but to transform it. My main areas of interest are abstract and documentary photography. The market was a great location to explore through the lens and has yielded a rich and varied collection of work.
